Balancing academics and athletics

Sophomore Erica Whiting describes how she manages school, work and rowing.

"Joining the UM Women's Novice Rowing team has been one of my best decisions since starting college. When I first heard about the open tryouts and decided to give it a shot, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had never rowed before, nor had I ever imagined I would be a student-athlete at a D1 school. It can be difficult sometimes, and having two-to-four hours of practice six days a week can really add a strain to the already busy lifestyle of a college student. I don't regret joining the team though. I feel very lucky to have been given the chance to learn a new sport and represent the University of Michigan. Rowing is a really unique sport, and the feeling when everyone is moving together and really making the boat move in the water is so rewarding.

I am so thankful for all the support my fellow Evans Scholars have given me over the year. It has been great getting to make new friends on the team, but I know that the Scholars will always have my back. Special shoutout to my roommate Jolene for never complaining about my alarm going off at 5 a.m. multiple times a week!"
